Welcome and thank you for visiting Callaham Guitars™. We are dedicated to producing the finest Guitars and Replacement Parts for those who want only the best for their instruments.

I have been fortunate to have grown up with the great instruments of the 20th century at my disposal. From Lloyd Loar Mandolins, Pre-war Martins and Gibson instruments to 50's Gibson Les Pauls and Fender Strats and Teles. It is from those great instruments that we establish our base line for tone.

I was also fortunate to have been raised in a machine shop and later earned a Mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech. I try to bring all of this experience together to produce our products. Our goal is to produce the finest products available so that every musician will be able to reach their goal.

- Bill Callaham

What's New !

  • Callaham Antiqued 1 ply parchment S & T model Pickguards.

We are adding to our pickguard options with the addition of antiqued 1 ply pickguards. This is a very little antiquing to the outer edges producing a little browning effect. This is available on both single ply Tele and single ply Strat pickguards. It is very hard to capture this antiquing in a picture because it is subtle and evenly blended. The pickguard looks like it has been in a smoky room but not abused.

See Strat Parts page or Tele Parts page respectively for pricing.

  • Callaham Vintage Tele Bridge Specialized for Bigsby Flat Mount styled Vibratos.

This has been an ongoing project with one of our custom builder clients: Creston Lea of Creston Electric Intstruments. At his request, we have developed a vintage Tele bridge using our existing plate Specialized for Bigsby Use. The rear lip of the bridge is reliefed to accomodate the Bigsby tremolo system, and we include a special set of enhanced saddles that are notched so that the 2 1/8 string spacing of the Telecaster is maintained. The intonation screws are also slotted on their tips to allow for easy installation adjustment. The quality of materials and workmanship in this bridge is substantially better than any other Tele bridge of this type on the market today.

    Price is $157.50 plus shipping

  • Callaham Front Roller Upgrade Kit for Bigsby B5 and B7 units.

All guitars equipped with a Bigsby B5 or B7 Vibrato suffer greatly from reduced frequency response and sustain because of the complete lack of quality of the front roller of the units. Our upgrade kits provides a solid, stainless steel front roller and axil that will widen the frequency response and sustain to where it should have always been. The roller is polished to a mirror finish and is grooved to maintain string alignment. This is a simple retrofit and pays huge dividends.

    Price is $42.00 plus shipping

  • Callaham '54 Style Wraparound Les Paul Bridge.

To complement our Steel Stopbar Tailpiece, we have produced a limited run of a 1954 Style Wraparound bridges for use with Les Paul Jr's, Melody Makers, SG Specials, etc. Using the same high quality steel alloy as both our ABR-1 Bridge and Stopbar Tailpiece, this bridge greatly improves the tonal characteristics of guitars that use a wraparound bridge/tailpiece assembly. The improvements to note separation, width of frequency response, and sustain are like night and day. Please note that while your guitar will sound significantly better, the intonation will remain the same; meaning it will still not be perfect.

Machined from the same alloy as our ABR-1 bridge, the steel tailpiece yields the additional definition and frequency response so many Gibson styled guitars need. The tone change can best be described as being equivalent to going from a dead set of strings to a new set of strings. Coupled with our steel ABR-1 bridge, the instrument starts to take on piano like qualities. The notes are absolutely solid and the feel of the response is highly touch sensitive. Retweaking of your amp settings is not out of the question. You should be able to flatten out the response so that switching from bridge to neck is more balanced.

Sustain; I am always amused by the claims that aluminum tailpiece adds sustain. Aluminum will NEVER come close to the sustain produced by our steel tailpiece.

You can use your existing studs or whatever studs you want. We are firm believers in 1 piece studs but changing over to our 1 piece design is not easy and only for experienced repairman. If you are doing new construction and have an interest in our 1 piece custom studs, inquire via e-mail. Our testing involved stock Gibson studs, aftermarket studs, and our 1 piece studs. With the steel tailpiece the effects of the studs is minimal. We do suggest the studs are tightened down firm.

As with all of our products, we do not believe in repeating the mistakes of the past. The original 50's tailpieces were made from aluminum because it was easy and cheap. Producing a tailpiece from steel and machining it is three times as hard in all areas of the manufacturing process. But it is the best material if you are concerned with your sound. The myths that have been propogated over the years regarding weight as some important property are completely false and based on zero science. The same principles that apply to a trem block also apply to a tailpiece.

We were concerned with maintaining the vintage look. And with the help of customers with original 50's tailpieces we used them as guides. After machining all the tailpiece are hand sanded and polished to recreate the same feel and look of originals. We do not purposely try to recreate the flaws and lack of craftmanship that so many of the originals exhibit. Having said that, we do not try to make them look perfect and exact from part to part. They all have their own individualality depending on which one of us was doing the handwork. They are only available in nickel plating, and unlike the other aftermarket parts where the plating is piled on producing a cheap looking part, our plating is done with care yielding a graceful finish.

  • Swamp Ash Lumber Sale.

We currently have a large surplus of swamp ash lumber available for our customers interested in building their own instrument. The lumber has been lightly surfaced to just under 2 inches thick, and has been cut to roughly 20 inches in length. The width of each board varies between 6 and 11 inches. For our customers who desire the full "do-it-yourself" (DIY) experience, we will ship two individual boards, with which you may construct your own 1-3/4'' x 14'' x 20'' body blank.

If you do not have access to the tools needed to produce your own body blank, we can make you a two piece blank that is finish sanded to 1-3/4'' x 14'' x 20''. If you want a different thickness than 1-3/4 inches, that is not a problem.

This is premium swamp ash we have had for over 15 years. It has been kept in our humidity controlled facility. Because we only make one piece bodied guitars, this wood could not be used. But in order to get the one piece boards, we had to buy the smaller width boards. You will not find better wood anywhere.

This wood is priced to sell. The more you buy the better we will do on the price. What we will not do is go through the boards and weigh them. One person wants one weight, another person something different. Weight does not define a species. Weight does not guarantee a good sounding guitar. A tree that yields very light boards can spawn a tree that produces heavier boards. It is still swamp ash. Some of you will get light weight blanks, others will get blanks that weigh more. No one will get something that is not swamp ash, and no one will get something that I consider heavy.

The guitars produced in the 70's could be characterized as being heavy. Now people are suddenly thinking they're great because they are older. I've got news for you, a large majority were junk then, they are junk now and will always be junk. And the reason they are junk is not because they are heavy.

Local pickup is available but you must call first. We will not reserve lumber; it is first come, first serve. If you want to come and take it all, that is fine by me. Make me an offer I can't refuse.

  • Callaham CNC Machined Steel Billet ABR-1 tun-o-matic bridges for Gibson Guitars.

We started this project in February of 2009 to solve the problem of a completely inferior bridge material used by Gibson since 1954 and copied by every aftermarket bridge maker since. All ABR-1 bridges and their aftermarket copies have been made of ZINC (pot metal). Zinc is a tremendous dampener and never should come in contact so directly with the strings as it does on an ABR-1 bridge. But casting a bridge body in zinc is very cheap. I try not to use the inflated adjectives used by so many in this business, but our machined billet steel bridge body will make any guitar using an ABR-1 or a Nashville Tun-o-matic bridge into a true stringed instrument. The widening of frequency response, the focus and note separation of chords, and true singing effortless sustain will be obtained. We have stainless steel stud/thumbwheels kits for changing a traditional ABR-1 bridge and a special stud kit for converting guitars with a Nashville bridge to our ABR-1 bridge.

Please read our ABR-1 bridge page and if this page does not answer your questions, please feel free to e-mail us.
